You awaken in darkness without all your memories intact. Your physical condition isn't good, either. But you choose which has suffered more. If your physical condition is better, maybe you can escape the darkness on your own. If your memories serve you better, maybe your chances of help arriving are better... and maybe you can recall where you are exactly and why you're there. Nothing is certain....

The Pit: Escape or Die

This game was created as an entry for Locus Jam 2024.

Its creation was begun after the jam opened to submissions on May 11, 2024.

The coding for this version of the game was finished before the jam closed to submissions on May 21, 2024.

Little time was had for testing the game, so if you find bugs... apologies... but it would be nice of you to let the developer know.

The main rule of the jam is that the setting be confined to a single location.

The location chosen for this game is a pit, from its top to its bottom.

Mentions of other locations are made in the game, of two natures....

The first is the main character's memories of recent events.

The other is in epilogues to the story, after the main action is finished, just so players of the game may have some closure.

Some routes have more 'closure' than others, with some routes assuming that the main character escapes once any help arrives, and other routes going a bit further.

It is hoped these mentions of other locations don't break the rules, but we'll leave that for the jam judges to decide.

This text-only game contains just under 10,000 words of dialogue and narration, plus nearly 40 menus.

There are numerous possible routes through the story, the one taken during any playthrough being a randomized one, with chances for 'good' results being weighted based on player choices.

While it contains no material of a sexual nature, this game is intended for a mature audience.

It contains disturbing descriptions of violence and the supernatural, which even some adults may find triggering.

The above was taken from the Author's Foreword available inside the game (no need to read the Author's Foreword in the game if you read it here first)

Oh, dang! That took some twists! I'm definitely intrigued. I liked the way the scroll of text evoked the sense of the pit. I've only found a couple "endings" so far but I'm looking forward to seeing what else is going on with this story

Hey, glad you like the game so far. There are quite a few "endings" packed into this relatively short game. If I'd had more time, I'd have added achievements, so players could have an idea of just how much is possible in this game. Thing is, because some randomization is involved, attempting to make the same choices during two different playthroughs can theoretically result in two different "endings" being reached.
